Mean Value Analysis for a Class of PEPA Models
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper a class of closed queueing network is modelled in the Markovian process algebra PEPA and solved using the classical Mean Value Analysis (MVA). This approach is attractive as it negates the need to derive the entire state space, and so certain metrics from large models can be obtained with little computational effort. The approach is illustrated with two numerical examples. About the author Nigel Thomas joined the School of Computing Science in January 2004 from the University of Durham, where he had been a lecturer since 1998. His research interests lie in performance modelling, in particular Markov modelling through queueing theory and stochastic process algebra. Nigel was awarded a PhD in 1997 and an MSc in 1991, both from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.Nigel is currently Director of Postgraduate Teaching within the School of Computing Science and Degree Programme Director for the MSc in Computing Science. Practical applications of performance modelling of security protocols using PEPA
Trade-off between security and performance has become an intriguing area in recent years in both the security and performance communities. As the security aspects of security protocol research is fully-fledged, this thesis is therefore devoted to conducting a performance study of these protocols. The long term objective is to translate formal definitions of security protocols to formal performa...
متن کاملHybrid analysis of large scale PEPA models
We introduce a new hybrid analysis technique for large scale PEPA models that combines stochastic simulation with ODEs, providing a finer trade-off between accuracy of the solutions and the associated computational costs. We describe a version that employs ODEs for the mean component counts and also a version using ODEs for second order moments. This enables the calculation of covariances of co...
متن کاملProcess-Algebraic Modelling of Priority Queueing Networks
We consider a closed multiclass queueing network model in which each class receives a different priority level and jobs with lower priority are served only if there are no higher-priority jobs in the queue. Such systems do not enjoy a product form solution, thus their analysis is typically carried out through approximate mean value analysis (AMVA) techniques. We formalise the problem in PEPA in...
متن کاملFundamental Results on Fluid Approximations of Stochastic Process Algebra Models
In order to avoid the state space explosion problem encountered in the quantitative analysis of large scale PEPA models, a fluid approximation approach has recently been proposed, which results in a set of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) to approximate the underlying continuous time Markov chain (CTMC). This paper presents a mapping semantics from PEPA to ODEs based on a numerical repres...

In this paper we apply the high-level modelling language PEPA to the performance analysis of a parallel program with a pipeline skeleton which computes the Mean Value Analysis (MVA) algorithm for queueing networks.
